CUC makes headway to meet Cayman's renewable energy goals


The Cayman Islands Government’s Energy Policy requires 70 per cent of electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2037. CUC studies have shown that a substantial amount of front-of-meter and behind- the-meter battery storage will be needed to integrate more solar and wind energy.
To this end, Electriq Power, a developer of home energy storage, management, and monitoring solutions was recently awarded a contract to partner with Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) in an innovative Behind the Meter Energy Storage Pilot Programme.
The residential battery pilot project calls for Electriq Power to deploy its industry-leading PowerPod platform, in 10 Grand Cayman homes to showcase behind the meter Energy Storage System technologies. The contract also calls for Electriq to market, install, deploy, and manage these behind-the-meter systems as a virtual power plant (VPP) with installations being carried out by local contractors. ....

WINNERS SELECTED FOR HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY MAKEOVER COMPETITION

Over 800 entries were received for Cayman’s first home energy efficiency competition, organised by the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure in partnership with the Caribbean Utilities Company, Limited (CUC).
The winners of the energy audits, worth up to $1,900 each, are Sheredan Coulburn, Twila Escalante, W. David and Jewel Smalldon, Winklet Ebanks, Elaine Whitefield Anderson, Dasmin Douglas, Isa Daniela Eden and Michael Rivers. Each of the eight finalists were also gifted an EcoBee smart thermostat from CUC.
Following an RFP process, Caymanian-owned company, Greentech Solar, has been hired to perform the energy audits during the month of December. Greentech will analyse the eight homes and determine where and how energy is being lost, what systems a ....
