Calls for strict penal statute follows mob attack on doctor at COVID-19 care centre
A pan-Northeast legal group has renewed its demand for enacting law to deal specifically with cases of mob lynching.
The Assam-based North East Legal Organization (NELO) refreshed its year-old demand following the mob assault on a doctor at a COVID-19 care centre in central Assam’s Hojai district on June 1.
The police arrested 24 people, including a woman, for grievously injuring Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapati, holding him responsible for the death of a COVID-19 positive person who, healthcare officials said, died by the time he reached the centre. ....

Swiss Banker on Trial With Alleged $2.2 Million Insider Trader

(Bloomberg) A Swiss businessman faces a trial Monday accused of leaking company secrets to a former Lazard banker and then trading off the information in a case that has embroiled two companies that are mainstays of Swiss industry. Hans Ziegler is accused of exploiting his role as a director of pump-making conglomerate Oerlikon Corp. and steel producer Schmolz & Bickenbach to feed commercially-sensitive information to the banker for over three years until he was found out in late 2016. Ziegler passed 19 valuable chunks of data on to the banker, who can only be named as B. under Swiss reporting restrictions. Lawyers for Ziegler and B. did not return messages seeking comment. Federal prosecutors opened a probe into Ziegler, himself the former CEO of Swiss conglomerate Erb Group, in 2016 after learning of the allegations. He resigned from the boards of Oerlikon and Schmolz & Bickenbach as the probe became known. Ziegler, 68, exploited his role as a director of Oerlikon, Schmolz and two ....

A Louisiana House committee approved a bill Thursday that seeks to change how state officials deal with employers that improperly classify their employees as independent contractors.
Employers pay taxes into the unemployment trust fund based on their employee payroll. Claiming that your employees are contract workers allows an employer to dodge those taxes, forcing companies that play by the rules to shoulder more of the burden to support the fund, some lawmakers and officials said.
House Bill 705 by Columbia Republican Rep. Neil Riser is awaiting a vote in the Senate. It would enhance penalties for misclassification and establish criteria to define who is or isn’t an employee. Penalties would be waived for a first offense if the employer gets into compliance within 60 days. ....
