Today In Johnson City History: July 11


July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, “On last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.”
The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboro’.
July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry.
“A charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.” ....

July 7, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported an exhibition would take place at the Fall Branch High School. The event would be on July 13 “if the weather is fair, if not on the following Tuesday. The friends of this Institution and the public generally are respectfully invited to attend.” Z.B. Lockwood was the principal of the Fall Branch High School.
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1866.
July 7, 1887: According to The Comet, “Capt. S.T. Harris has purchased the Al Lyle corner, opposite the Hoss House, and as soon as he can get possession will erect a handsome bank building. The building will be fire proof (sic) with marble trimmings and tile floors. It will be used for a national bank.”In another item The Comet carried that day it was reported, that “Col. T.E. Matson returned yesterday morning from South Carolina. He reports every thing (sic) favorable for Johnson City ....

June 3, 1886: The Comet readers learned of the death of an area resident. “Mary A. Andis, died at her residence, six miles south of Jonesboro, May 4, 1886, in the seventy-second year of her age. Mrs. Andis was twice married, first to Mr. Nathaniel H. Willis in Harrisonburg, Va., Oct. 2, 1837, and then to Mr. Adam Andis in Jonesboro, Tenn., June 18, 1860.”
More details revealed, “She was a member of the Baptist Church and had been for forty-one years. Her last illness was marked by great sufferings of body. Though she was unable to talk to her friends and relatives while crossing the ‘last river,’ yet they derive comfort from the record of a long life of professed christian (sic) consecration and union with the people of God. It would have given her children and friends so much comfort to receive her dying testimony to her interest in the Saviour, but they were denied this happy privilege. Dying in the faith of Jesus, all christians (sic) have the prese ....
