Proposed San Diego sewer rate spike for single-family homes is scheduled for September council vote

Sewer rates for San Diegans in single-family homes would increase about 17 percent next year and a total of 31 percent over the next four years under a revised rate proposal scheduled for a Sept. 21 City Council vote.
The proposal would reduce sewer rates for most businesses, condominiums and apartments based on two comprehensive studies indicating that those customers have been paying too much while those in single-family homes haven’t been paying enough.
The council voted unanimously July 20 to schedule a final vote on the proposal this fall, despite concerns about the impact on single-family homeowners.
The rate changes, which affect all 2.2 million city sewer customers, would take effect Jan. 1. ....

Review board to form committee to examine Sheriff's Department jail deaths

The review board charged with investigating complaints against the San Diego Sheriff’s Department plans to create a special committee to examine claims that department officials made about a San Diego Union-Tribune investigation into deaths in county jails.
The committee idea was proposed last week at a meeting of the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board or CLERB after a reporter challenged the veracity of a presentation by a Sheriff’s Department official at the board’s December meeting.
Paul Parker, the board’s executive officer, shared the reporter’s email with the board and placed a discussion about it on the agenda for the January meeting. ....

Temporary shelter costs at San Diego Convention Center exceed $40M, city records show

In the latest month of the San Diego Convention Center’s unexpected role as a homeless shelter, the city paid $1.6 million in rent to its own nonprofit that runs the bayfront facility and $727,000 in operations and maintenance costs.
Other expenses for November included $1.5 million to the charities running the makeshift shelter, $915,000 to feed fewer than 1,000 clients, $343,000 for extra security and thousands of dollars in miscellaneous costs, city records show.
In total for November, San Diego taxpayers spent $5.7 million to temporarily house about 900 people just over $190,000 a day, or more than $6,000 per person. That’s more than $210 per day for each person living at the shelter. ....
