'Missing' students, teacher pay raises: look at FL schools budget

JACKSONVILLE, Fla Florida s legislative session begins Tuesday and this year is expected to be even tougher due to the pandemic.
One topic to watch is education. Almost 90,000 students are reportedly unaccounted for in Florida, apparently due to the pandemic, which could have an impact how much money school districts get. It s not the only education issue local union leaders are watching.
They did a hearing in the legislature this past week talking about a lot of the districts . cutting millions and millions and millions of dollars because the students are gone, said Terrie Brady, president of Duval Teachers United. First of all, where are the students? ....

90,000 Florida kids didn’t show up for school this year. Where are they?
The pandemic steered some to homeschooling or private school. But officials suspect many “missing” students are not being educated at all.

TALLAHASSEE — Florida legislators and local education officials are trying to pinpoint what happened to nearly 90,000 “missing” public school students, as public school enrollment estimates have dropped amid the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Even With Remote Option, Enrollment in Flagler's 9 Traditional Schools Is at Lowest Level Since 2005


Enrollment in Flagler County schools had just started growing again last year, after a flat decade, when the coronavirus pandemic struck, once again depressing numbers, but only slightly. (© FlaglerLive)
Student enrollment in Flagler County schools as of Jan. 21, obtained from the district today, show an overall enrollment of 13,111, including Imagine School, including iFlagler, and including students attending classes through the district’s remote-live option.
Without the 844 students who attend the charter school and the 731 students enrolled in virtual school, enrollment in the district’s nine traditional schools falls to 11,536. That’s the lowest enrollment in the district’s schools since 2005, when just shy of 11,000 students attended traditional public schools, and at a time when the district was growing by about 1,000 students a year. ....
