Indiana lawmakers pass bill increasing penalties for rioting


A bill that would increase penalties for rioting and prioritize the protection of statues has passed both houses in the state legislature and awaits Gov. Eric Holcomb s signature, one of the last major surviving bills prompted by the riots in downtown Indianapolis last year. 
Senate Bill 187 would make rioting  mainly a Class A misdemeanor  into a Level 6 felony offense if it results in serious bodily injury or causes property damage of $750 to under $50,000. Rioting also would carry a more serious Level 5 felony charge if it results in catastrophic injury, death or property damage of at least $50,000. Under current state law, rioting is a Level 6 felony if it is committed while armed with a deadly weapon.  ....
