Tax evasion under exaggerated numbers of illicit trade Islamabad April 20, 2021 Islamabad : The multinational tobacco companies have been trying to evade millions of rupees in taxes under a pretext of exaggerated illicit trade of the product in the country, reveals a study. The Center for Global and Strategic Studies [CGSS] has conducted a research study, Illicit Trade in Tobacco: A Dossier on Contributing Factors and its Global Implications, to expose the connection between the alleged illicit trade and tax evasion by the multinational tobacco companies. The study said that the companies were using the illegal trade as a smokescreen to avoid taxation and implement international commitments. It is happening because the powerful and vested interest groups are using the excuse of illicit trade to avoid taxes. ....
Govt committed to international fight against illicit financial flows Business April 15, 2021 ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is committed to supporting all international initiatives to help stem the illicit financial flows and in the recovery of stolen assets, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Jehanzeb Khan said on Wednesday. “If the international efforts under SDG (sustainable development goal) target 16.4 do indeed yield results, then such recoveries can be used to address the funding gap in support of sustainable infrastructure investments in the developing countries” Khan said during a a virtual even organised by United Nations Economic and Social Council. Khan said the debt service suspension initiative (DSSI) debt servicing relief provided much-needed fiscal space to developing countries, including Pakistan, to support their population cope with the deeply damaging health and livelihood consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

PILIBHIT: A joint team of the excise department and local police on Sunday night seized 850 boxes of illicit branded whisky worth Rs 38 lakh from a truck and a car near Dhirpur Crossing in Farrukhabad. The seizure was a part of a drive against illicit liquor launched following the order of additional chief secretary (excise) Sanjay R Bhoosreddy in view of the forthcoming panchayat elections. The carriers failed to produce valid documents or the transit permits of the liquor stock being transported from Himachal Pradesh, said excise inspector Sanjay Gupta. ....
