The Sanibel Captiva Business Women’s Association will host its inaugural networking event Tips & Sips today at 6 p.m. at 400 Rabbits, at 975 Rabbit Road, Sanibel.
Maureen McGauran, owner of Beachwalker Marketing & Communications, will speak on tips to improve a business’ social media presence.
“Tips and Sips is a relaxed networking component of SCBWA that meets the third Wednesday each month at various Sanibel restaurants,” President Taylor Osborne said. “We’re looking forward to a lively discussion on social media tips.”
Light appetizers will be provided, with a cash bar available. ....

Council covers projects, new hire and masks

The Sanibel City Council directed staff on next steps for the police department and Center 4 Life projects, approved the hiring of an aquatics manager for the Sanibel Recreation Center for a future reimplementation of those programs, and discussed the city’s mask mandate at its recent meeting.
On April 6, City Manager Judie Zimomra outlined for the council the background of the ongoing Sanibel Police Department and Center 4 Life projects. Under the direction of the previous council, the police project entails renovating and expanding the existing department at a cost of about $5 million. The Center 4 Life project entails relocating the facility to a Library Way building bought last year. ....

Kiwanis to launch online auction to benefit scholarships

For the past year, COVID-19 has put a stop to many major gatherings on the islands, including the Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club’s annual Spaghetti Dinner. But, the club has a new event that promises to be both fun and safe: the Kiwanis Online Silent Auction.
Available for browsing, the auction Website features unusual items and exciting experiences. Listings include resort and hotel stays, golf outings, sporting goods, fishing and sightseeing trips, artwork, custom chef-prepared dinners, private wine tasting dinner party, home services, legal consultation and even a rare collector’s item, a vintage 1969 Honda 350 motorcycle in pristine condition. ....

Council says goodbye to members and votes on permits, signs

The Sanibel City Council bid farewell to three council members at its recent meeting, as well as considered special events permits and a change to temporary outdoor signage for businesses.
On March 2, Mayor Mick Denham marked his final meeting serving on the council, along with Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench. Denham did not seek re-election in March, and Goss and Muench were appointed late last year on an interim basis to fill the seats of former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan as they ran for office in November’s election. ....

Annual festival to present local chamber ensembles

The Sanibel Music Festival s Emerging Artist Series will bring the FGCU Bower School of Music and The Arts Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Strings to the Sundial Beach Resort and Spa in March.
This year, the Sanibel Music Festival will launch the Emerging Artist Series in March.
It will feature chamber ensembles from Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music and The Arts on March 23 and March 30 at 11 a.m. at the Sundial Beach Resort and Spa on Sanibel.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kyle Szabo and the talented Bower School of Music artists to Sanibel,” festival President Jana Stone said. “The Emerging Artist Series will showcase promising talent in a beautiful island venue, while allowing strict observance of public health standards.” ....
