Bastrop council to adopt rules for fee-based electric bikes, scooters


The Bastrop City Council is poised to adopt a new ordinance to regulate electric bicycle, GPS-equipped bicycle and motor-assisted scooter services in the city.
The City Council on May 25 voted 4-0 to approve the first reading of the ordinance, which would go into effect should it pass a second vote June 8.
Only four members of the council were present during the May 25 meeting to vote on the ordinance. Council Member Bill Peterson was absent due to illness.
The ordinance, as crafted by Police Chief Clint Nagy, defines how and where these modes of transportation can be used in the city, while also providing guidelines for companies that seek to provide electric bicycle, GPS-equipped bicycle or motor-assisted scooter services in Bastrop. ....

Bastrop to add floating holiday, bucks requests for Juneteenth holiday


The Bastrop City Council last week decided to pass on making Juneteenth a city holiday, opting instead to add a floating holiday to its roster of employee benefits. The move sparked debate and discussion among council members, residents and people who want the city to formally recognize Juneteenth   an annual holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 
The council’s discussion on April 27 centered around how Bastrop could provide city employees with an additional holiday, after the council was presented two weeks earlier with the results of an employee classification and compensation study.
The study revealed that Bastrop lagged behind neighboring city governments, the county and the state in how many holidays it observed. ....

Bastrop to charge for city-run recreational programming after YMCA left


People wanting to participate in Bastrop’s city-run fitness and recreation programming will soon have to pay to participate in activities, exercise classes and other events.
Beginning in April, Bastrop will enter into Phase Two of its city-run recreational programming, which will come with a pilot registration and membership process as well as required payment from anyone interested participating in the city s fitness and recreational programming.
The Bastrop City Council during its March 9 meeting approved a payment structure for Phase Two of its plan, which will last until the end of September. 
The monthly cost to participate in the program will be $30 for a city resident and $35 for anyone who resides outside the city limits. Families who live in the city can sign up for $50 and families who are nonresidents will pay $55 per month. Seniors who live in the city will be charged $20 and those who live outside the city will pay $25. ....
