Increased Funding For Pedestrian Safety, Police Oversight Board In Latest City Budget Draft

Projects initially left out of the Cincinnati budget are back on the table after negotiations in the Budget and Finance Committee Monday. Council members approved plans to prioritize pedestrian safety, as well as increase funding for the city s police oversight board.
City administrators say they identified about $1.2 million in the operating budget, and $1 million in the capital budget, that could still be allocated.
Committee members agreed to use $500,000 for pedestrian safety, adding to the $754,000 already allocated in the city manager s proposed budget.
Interim Council Member Steve Goodin says it s the number one topic of constituent complaints.
Every neighborhood we go to we hear about the same problem intersections, lack of proper [road] grading, etc., Goodin said. ....

Council Rejects Proposal For Immediate Disclosure Of Some Campaign Donations

Wikimedia Commons
A measure voted down by a Cincinnati council committee Tuesday would have required immediate disclosure of some campaign donations. Council Member Greg Landsman says he s working on a new version of his proposal to require sitting council members and the mayor to report donations above $200 within 48 hours. The donations would be published on a new city website where the public could search the filings.
I think this is a really important step to restore public trust as it relates to contributions and votes, how policy is made, Landsman said.
Some members of the Law and Public Safety Committee objected to the measure, saying it would be a burden to require such frequent filing. ....

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Cincinnati City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee was supposed to start the process of approving $35 million in federal funds, but that is now on hold.
It now appears City Council is not exactly sure yet what it can spend the American Rescue Plan money on.
“At the very end [of Tuesday’s meeting] we heard from the administration, their take on the final guidance from the Treasury Department on what we can spend this money on, and it really did cause us to pause and have a bit of a reality check,” said Interim Council Member Steve Goodin. ....

New Data: Cincinnati's Affordable Housing Gap Is 19,230 Units

Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman is chair of City Council s new Affordable Housing Subcommittee.
I think it s important that if we re using numbers, we at least know that we re using 2010 numbers in 2021, Smitherman said in late March. And we don t know; those numbers could be bigger, those numbers could be smaller.
Michael Jones, a professor of economics at the University of Cincinnati, thinks the gap is quite a bit smaller. He researches labor and public economics, and says he got interested in housing after reading a WVXU article about council members wanting more recent data.
He decided to take a look for himself, and presented his findings to the subcommittee in mid-April. His analysis is based on a report published in March from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. ....
