Santa Clarita City Council members continued their deliberations on the future of council elections Tuesday during a closed session special meeting.
The City Council has not publicly met about the possibility of transitioning to district-based elections due to litigation alleging that the city’s current “at-large” elections dilute the votes of Santa Clarita’s Latino community, comprising one-third of city residents.
Tuesday marked the fourth time since late May that the lawsuit appeared on the City Council’s special closed session meeting agenda. Each time, City Attorney Joseph Montes did not have a report on the item during the public session. ....

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors delayed the vote on a motion Tuesday that would create a permanent juvenile-detention facility at Camp Joseph Scott or Camp Kenyon Scudder, which are both in Saugus.
The move comes as
Santa Clarita officials sent letters to the board, contending the project requires a comprehensive assessment before continuing.
If approved, the board motion would adopt a state subcommittee’s recommendations to move violent youth offenders to the Saugus facilities, which were originally designed to host nonviolent youth offenders, while directing the county to “ensure that the appropriate renovations are made at Scott or Scudder within 90 days to be safe and ready for use.” ....

City Council Approves Memorial Plaza For Saugus High Shooting Victims
Members of the Santa Clarita City Council approved the design of a memorial plaza at Central Park meant to honor the victims of the Saugus High shooting that took place just over a year ago.
During their first meeting of 2021, the Santa Clarita City Council voted unanimously to approve the design of a memorial plaza, giving the project the green light to begin construction.
“I did want to say to the families the horror of losing children… it’s tough,” said Councilmember Laurene Weste. “I do want to make sure our parks remain parks- and remain places of joy and children need to be in parks and feel like being there and working and playing together to promote camaraderie… not a place of sadness.” ....

City Council To Discuss Plans For Saugus High Shooting Memorial Plaza At Central Park
The Santa Clarita City Council is set to discuss the Central Park Memorial project for the victims of the Saugus High School shooting at their meeting Tuesday.
Councilmembers are expected to review and consider a conceptual design for a project at Central Park, developed to memorialize the victims of the Nov. 14, 2019, Saugus High School shooting.
At the Aug. 25, 2020, City Council meeting, Councilwoman Marsha McLean was appointed to work with City staff and the victims’ families to identify a proposed location and design for a physical memorial. ....
