LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger announced today that she has authored a motion to create a Blue-Ribbon Commission on Homelessness to give recommendations to the board on ways to solve the homelessness crisis.
“The creation of a Blue-Ribbon Commission is critical to finally address that homelessness is a serious crisis, Barger said. A blue-ribbon commission is typically made up of experts in a field and functions to give recommendations, but doed not hold any power itself.
“I have said many times that the status quo is no longer working and it s time that we engage and collaborate with service providers, government agencies and city representatives throughout the county to come up with new strategies and solutions to bring individuals off the street and provide them with the care and services they deserve. The Homeless Initiative is Los Angeles County’s massive effort to expand and enhance services for people who are homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, largely financed through Measure H. It is part of the vast safety net that the County provides to people experiencing homelessness, which also includes medical treatment at County public hospitals, direct benefits under the County’s General Relief program, and more.
The Homeless Initiative includes $454.8 million raised through Measure H, ¼-cent sales tax approved by County voters in 2017 to pay for homeless prevention, street outreach, supportive services and employment, shelter, and housing. The remaining $72.3 million includes $14.8 million in federal stimulus funding, $29.4 million in state grants, and $28.1 million from other funding sources. ....

Who May Apply: Local public libraries (state-aided). Must partner with a sponsoring municipality.
Use: To plan, acquire, construct, or rehabilitate public library facilities including, but not limited to: ADA upgrades, new roof, replacement windows, energy efficient upgrades to HVAC systems, facility expansion and new construction.
