Investigating the Spring Elections 2021

Investigating the Spring Elections 2021
Investigating the Spring Elections 2021
This year has been very different for everyone, and this student election season has also seen a change. Many of the Sabb roles had a handful of candidates, much more than previous years. Furthermore, there were two student-wide Spring Elections, although both not equally advertised.
In 2020, 2,145 students voted in the Spring elections, electing both sabbatical roles and student officers. This year, SUSU decided to split sabbatical roles and student leader roles into two different elections, to encourage more people to take part in the sabbatical elections, whether as candidates or electors. In the 2021 elections, Sabbatical roles received votes from 2,415 students.  The Student Leader elections as a whole received just 113 votes. ....

Union President Candidate Interview with Benjamin Dolbear

Union President Candidate Interview with Benjamin Dolbear
Wessex Scene
interviews Benjamin Dolbear, who is running for the role of Union President in the 2021 SUSU Leadership Elections.
Why have you decided to run for the role of Union President?
I am running for this role for three reasons. The first is that I have the experience to succeed in a leadership position. For the past three years, I have been an elected member of a parish council, spearheading a campaign to encourage the parish to declare a climate emergency. I have also successfully held elected positions in SUSU, including as Arts & Humanities Faculty Officer, during which I worked to improve the spaces at Avenue Campus. Secondly, I have the passion to make real social change. Last summer, I appeared on BBC Question Time to speak about race inequality in the UK and decolonising the school curriculum, and I have worked on media campaigns to secure British citizenship rights for Hong Kong citizens ....

Union President Candidate Interview with Joanne Lisney

Union President Candidate Interview with Joanne Lisney
Wessex Scene
interviews Joanne Lisney, who is running for the role of Union President in the 2021 SUSU Leadership Elections.
Why have you decided to run for the role of Union President?
I have held various roles in my 4 years at university. From being involved with student media, being bar staff, to VP Education and Democracy for 2019/20 and current Faculty of Arts and Humanities Officer, these different walks of the University have enriched my understanding of SUSU. I am keen to take the ideas of previous presidents and make them business as usual whilst working on my own ideas for halls, sites, strategy thinking and sustainability. I am also not done with annoying the University, haha! Of course, I mean that in a positive sense. I want the student experience to improve, and that is what spurred me to run for this role. ....

Editorial: Assange Issue Highlights CUSU Questions

He was going to come. Then some people didn’t want him to. Now he isn’t, but for a reason that seems extremely odd (what embassy can’t make a video link work at 7 days notice?). The rights and wrongs of the invite have been debated endlessly and I’m not going to address them here. However, I would like to respond to questions of biased reporting that have come up in relation to this story, and also to talk about the role of our Student Union in all of this.
Women’s officer Susy in particular has been at the centre of this debate. As head of the Women’s Campaign she started the contentious petition to have Assange uninvited. I accept that Susy is not in place to represent me; I don’t self-define as a woman and had no part in getting her elected. But she did win an election on the back of a campaign which promised to co-operate with all the student media. It’s this part of her pledge that she’s clearly failed to live up to. ....
