COLLAB: Reparative Journalism, Y’all
Texas Observer’s engagement team is working to improve the way we do coverage, while reenvisioning a more accurate and equitable approach to journalism. To do it, we’re working alongside grassroots leaders and organizations to survey communities that are historically under-covered and frequently misrepresented in the media. We’re asking Texans how they receive their information, and about the issues they feel need to be prioritized. We’re also teaching residents how to combat disinformation, reach out to reporters, and even how to tell their own stories on a local level.
Our team understands that in order to improve journalism, we must first repair our relationship with historically oppressed communities. And that work is not possible without a joint effort with community changemakers, independent journalism and organizations. This is a full-on Collab and we’d love for you to be involved. ....

Gov. Greg Abbott s calls to increase ICE detention facilities are facing pushback.
Some Valley residents started a letter-writing campaign to U.S. Rep Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville). They want all ICE detainees to be released due to COVID-19 risks.
In 2020, 33-year-old Hilder Lainez-Alvarez said he was caught illegally crossing the border and was put in ICE custody.
Having severe asthma, Lainez-Alvarez caught the coronavirus while inside the El Valle Detention Center in Raymondville.
I [did] 30 days alone in the room, Lainez-Alvarez said. No nothing. ....
