Horses and Donkeys Help Increase Water Supply in the Desert by Digging Holes

In a weird twist to a popular saying, apparently horses can lead themselves to water and make a positive contribution to the local desert ecosystem while they are at it!
At least, that is what some researchers found in a study on equids and the impact of their water foraging habits.

'Culture is Prevention': Jeffco School District Uses Traditions To Curb Indigenous Teen Drug Use

Deelia Sherman, a junior at Stanley Lake High School in Westminster, sits on Jeffco’s Indian Education Student Council.
Every two years, the state conducts the Healthy Kids Colorado survey. It asks teens questions about a range of topics, from their health and home life to substance abuse. Data from the 2019 survey, taken before the pandemic, shows Indigenous teens are abusing hard drugs more than their peers. To curb use, one school district is turning to culture for its prevention efforts.
Jeffco Public Schools recently co-hosted a virtual drum-making event for Indigenous students and families living in metro Denver. District staff hand-delivered the materials to participants beforehand. The kits included the rawhide drumhead, the frame, the lace that ties it together and the drumstick. ....

Cheyenne Memories, Margot Liberty, 1972. These memories painstakingly collected over the years are considered highly accurate.
One of the memories came from Stands In Timbers’ grandparents who told how they as children hunted buffalo in a “big hole” near present day Sundance, Wyoming. This could very well refer to the Vore Buffalo Jump (VBJ) which is near Sundance and between Devil’s Tower and the Black Hills, then a highly traveled route for many Plains Tribes, including the Northern Cheyenne. The VBJ, a historic and archaeological site documents that various Plains Tribes used this location and method of harvesting buffalo for about three centuries. ....
