VARANASI: It was not just a game of cricket, but ‘dand-kanduk kridyayam’ that drew the attention of onlookers. A unique match in traditional India attire dhoti-kurta with tripund on the foreheads was played on the ground of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University (SSU) on Thursday with Vedic students taking up ‘dand’ (bat) and ‘kanduk’ (ball) to commemorate the 77th Foundation Day of Shashtrarth Mahavidyalaya, Varanasi.
All the players and ‘nirnakahah’ (umpires) were in dhoti and kurta. The running commentary was also in Sanskrit catching the attention of the people passing through the area. “It is surprising to see the Sanskrit version of the cricket,” said one Santosh Kumar, who approached the ground after hearing the commentary in Sanskrit. ....

VADODARA: In a bid to connect the oriental world with the modern world, one of the oldest libraries of Vadodara will now be open to public once every week.
The Mukti Kamal Mohan Jain Gyanbhandar which is housed above the Kothipol Jain temple in Raopura was until recently a members-only library. But now anyone can walk into this 92-year-old library on a Sunday and read any book from their collection of around 14,000.
“The purpose of a library is to spread knowledge and knowledge has no boundaries, so we have decided to keep the library open for everyone on Sundays,” said Prakash Sheth, the managing trustee. ....

Vijay Rupani, while interacting with the media on Tuesday, said that the government has applied for a patent to change the nomenclature of
dragon fruit to Kamalam . According to the CM, the word dragon for the fruit sounded inappropriate and so the Gujarat government had decided for the fruit to be called
Kamalam.
While interacting with the media on Tuesday during the launch of the Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission, Rupani said, We have applied for the patent of the dragon fruit to be called as Kamalam. But as of now, we the Gujarat government have decided to call the fruit Kamalam. ....
