Doctor shortage means patients in labour to be diverted from B.C. hospital into next month

VANCOUVER
A shortage of pediatricians means pregnant patients will still be diverted from a Metro Vancouver hospital into August.
The Fraser Health Authority said those who planned to give birth at Peace Arch Hospital will instead be sent elsewhere between July 30 and Aug. 9.
This is due to a shortage of pediatricians at the site, and is not the first of these notifications. Citing a gap in staffing, patients who had pre-existing plans to deliver at the Surrey hospital were also diverted for an 11-day stretch earlier in July.
The health authority said in a statement Tuesday that a new contract is in the works, which should result in a larger staff of pediatricians in Surrey. Additionally, a plan is in place to provide pediatric care from Aug. 9 to the end of the year, Fraser Health said. ....

A two-week diversion of maternity patients from White Rock s Peace Arch Hospital because of a shortage in pediatric care has many calling for action.
Earlier this week, Fraser Health announced it would be diverting expecting patients who required labour and delivery support to other hospitals from July 8 to July 19, leaving many labouring moms scrambling to find a backup plan.
Dr. Michael Smith, a pediatrician in Fraser Health and the regional medical director for the Maternal Infant and Child Youth Program, told CBC the diversion was the result of a gap in the number of pediatricians available to provide maternity coverage. ....

Sent home from B.C. hospital while in early labour, new mom says she gave birth in her bathroom

VANCOUVER
A Metro Vancouver woman was having regular contractions four minutes apart, and took that as a sign it was time to go to the hospital.
Bobbi-Dee Schultz said she went to Peace Arch Hospital, in Surrey, to meet her midwife, who did an assessment. According to Schultz, the midwife then told her, “You know the nurses, there’s not enough nurses on staff.”
She told CTV News Tuesday that she was also told she was only two centimetres dilated, not enough to be admitted. It was around 11 p.m., May 16, when she went to the hospital.
“I was in a lot of pain, I could barely even walk up to the room where she was,” said Schultz. ....
