SAN DIEGO In response to a spike in gun violence in San Diego, a group of community members on Thursday called on gang members to stop shootings. “We’re telling gang members to knock it off, because we’re sick of it,” said Michael Singletary. Singletary was one of several former gang members who joined the Community Assistance Support Team, better known as CAST, at the San Diego County Administration Center to launch Seasons of Peace, a months-long campaign during which they plan to host events to call out the violence. Plans that are in the works include a lowrider “cruise,” memorials for victims of gunfire and tree-planting events. ....
Six people from Sugar Landâs volunteer service program were recognized for their service to the city during a virtual city council meeting on April 20. Since 2007, the city annually selects a volunteer from each department who âfosters an atmosphere of community and enhances the delivery of city services by sharing their skills,â according to a news release. Sugar Landâs 2020 volunteers of the year are: Albon Wu (Parks and Recreation); Laaiqa Muhammad (Animal Services); Gabriel Rodriguez (Planning and Development Services); Brenda Frye (Municipal Court); Ted Lieb (Community Assistance Support Team) According to the city, the six volunteers recognized contributed more than 883 hours of volunteer service last year, which the city said equates to more than $24,000 in in-kind donations. ....
SAN DIEGO San Diego registered a drop in overall crime last year, but killings rose 10 percent from 2019, police officials announced Monday. There were 55 homicides recorded in 2020, marking the highest year-end total in the city in each of the past five years, according to Police Department data from previous years. Data shared Monday show overall crime dropped about 8 percent across the city, which consistently ranks among the safest large cities in the U.S. The data show drops in five of seven categories, with the exception of aggravated assaults, which increased about 9 percent, and homicides. Among violent crimes, rape dropped 13.5 percent while robbery decreased about 10 percent. ....
