INDOT awards over $100M in Grant Funds to Hoosier communites

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced Thursday that 218 cities, towns, and counties will receive a combined $100.2 million in state matching funds for local road projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Fund Program, a part of the “Next Level Roads” program.
Locally, Bartholomew County receives $991,000, Columbus gets $689,000, Franklin is awarded $1 million, Seymour receives $108,000, and both Jackson and Jennings Counties get $1 million each.
The Community Crossings Matching Grants are used to fund up to 50% of the construction of projects or the purchasing of materials. The grant dollars improve Indiana’s infrastructure, bring about economic development, and create jobs. ....

Garrett dives into plans to open pool


GARRETT — Plans are moving forward to open the Garrett City Pool this summer.
Work has begun this week to dismantle the large, blue slide at the city pool in order for a new slide to be installed this spring, according to Parks Superintendent Eric Mossberger.
The city is taking applications for lifeguards and will train them for the season, with the mindset that the pool will be open this year. Applications can be made at City Hall or on the city’s webpage.
City Planner Milton Otero told the Board of Works Tuesday the 2021 Boundary and Annexation Survey paper maps have been updated and submitted. Savings from 2019 and 2020 Community Crossings Matching Grants will be submitted as a change order to the Indiana Department of Transportation, reflecting new amounts. ....

Recycling center shows increased revenue, materials


GARRETT — While deliveries at the City of Garrett recycling center were down by nearly one-third last year, the center showed increases in both revenue and recyclable materials, City Planner Milton Otero reported to the Board of Works Tuesday.
His report tallied a total of 2,529 vehicles that delivered recyclable materials to the drive-through site on North Cowen Street in 2020, a decrease of 30.6% from 2019. The center saw 1,092 total volunteer hours accumulated, a decrease of 19.1% from the previous year.
The report showed the recycling center collected a total of 25,798 pounds of recyclable materials ranging from cardboard, magazines, newspapers, glass, plastic and sheet iron. This was an increase of 79.4% over 2019. The total 2020 revenue for recyclable materials turned-in was $1,179, an increase of 42.8% over 2019. ....

Potential developers eyeing Garrett sites


GARRETT — Three or four developers have shown interest in potential projects in Garrett, according to City Planner Milton Otero.
While not disclosing further information, Otero told the Garrett Common Council Tuesday that meetings of the city’s Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals are moving forward in February, with plans for socially distanced meetings in City Hall or in virtual sessions.
“This is very exciting for us, and we are hoping all goes well,” he said.
City Attorney Dan Brinkerhoff said he would be able to attend the February meetings virtually, if needed. January meetings of the Garrett Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals have been canceled. ....
