Starting next fall, Lawrence’s Kennedy Elementary will no longer educate K-5 students after the school board approved a plan to close the school.
The Lawrence school district plans to turn the building into an early-childhood education community center, with outside organizations initially providing services. But to make the change possible, Kennedy Elementary’s 185 K-5 students will have to move to three nearby schools Cordley, New York and Prairie Park next school year.
The board voted 6-1 to approve the plan with board member Carole Cadue-Blackwood voting against it Monday night. Board President Kelly Jones said during the meeting she knows the plan causes “grief” among Kennedy families, but she felt the district would take measures to address their concerns. ....

A new economic development organization started up in the village this year.
The Yellow Springs Development Corporation, or YSDC, is a quasi-governmental, nonprofit corporation that has been designated by the Village of Yellow Springs and Miami Township as their official Community Improvement Corporation, or CIC. The group also has representation from Yellow Springs Schools, Antioch College and the Yellow Springs Community Foundation. Its first meeting was Feb. 4.
The group worked primarily on two activities: exploring the possibility of siting “an educational commons” on the Antioch College campus, and selling the former Miami Township fire station on Corry Street, which was set to be vacated after trustees and the fire department moved in November to their new facility across town. The group also helped distribute local coronavirus relief to businesses. ....

Ardmore High School’s leadership class launched a successful donation drive last year that collected thousands of items for the community’s youngest and oldest in need. Dubbed “Do Good December,” dozens of students in the class collected, organized, stored and distributed items donated by third-hour classes.
“The students have been very involved,” said Chauvin Aaron, who teaches the leadership class that is undertaking the Chick-fil-a service project for a second year. His class has teamed up with a colleague s management class to coordinate collection efforts across the school. ....
