United Way of Pottawatomie County welcomes new executive director Submitted United Way of Pottawatomie County welcomes Sandy Vanderburg as its next executive director. Vanderburg will bring more than 10 years of hospitality, sales, and management experience to United Way of Pottawatomie County. In addition to her professional experience, Vanderburg has been an active member of the Shawnee community, volunteering for Junior Service League, participating in Leadership Shawnee, and serving as the hospitality leader for Life Church Shawnee. “Sandy impressed the hiring committee with her results-driven professional work,” said Jennifer Bell, United Way Board president. “Her experience serving in Shawnee and her home state of Texas will also be beneficial in this role serving our partner agencies and the greater Pottawatomie County community.” ....
Junior Service League cooks up recipe book for the first time in more than 30 years JSL The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Junior Service League to look for fundraising opportunities to substitute for in-person fundraisers. In place of the annual Ragin’ Cajun event, JSL is offering a collection of recipes for the first time in more than 30 years. The cookbook contains more than 600 recipes, all submitted by JSL members. The book is broken up into sections with Shawnee-themed titles and artwork from popular Shawnee landmarks. “These recipes are near and dear to the JSL members who submitted,” said Amanda Johnson. “The book includes some recipes from the version that was last published.” ....
SSM Health SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee recently awarded the Community Market of Pottawatomie County a $50,000 grant to purchase a refrigerated mobile market with the purpose of providing food in communities and locations that are considered food deserts. A food desert is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food. “Community Market of Pottawatomie County has made a huge impact in decreasing hunger in our community,” says Angi Mohr, president, SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee. “We are proud and excited to provide this grant to help combat food insecurity in our community and outlying areas.” ....
