CIRV hosts interventions to stem the tide of Youngstown violence

YOUNGSTOWN — The Community Initiative to Reduce Violence hosted a gun violence call-in program on Thursday at Youngstown Municipal Court.
The program is focused on addressing people who have been involved in violence, including those on probation or who have had other run-ins with law enforcement.
Guy Burney, director of CIRV, said if there aren't interventions now, some people might soon become another violence causality statistic in the city.
Police are battling a surge of gun violence. On Wednesday night, the Youngstown Police Department responded to a report of gunfire at West Boston Avenue and Idlewood Avenue. A man who was found in a shot-up vehicle was declared dead at the scene.

Youngstown minister seeks peace through prayer, fasting

The Rev. Lewis W. Macklin
Juneteenth is now a federal holiday that has been long celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in America.
The holiday was first recognized in Galveston Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people received the notification that they were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
While we celebrate and commemorate, let’s commit to educate and enlighten ourselves as to the importance of this new national holiday. On the occasion of Juneteenth, please enjoy the Hairspray’s rendition “I Know Where I've Been” performed by Cliffe College of Creative Arts & DANA School of Music at Youngstown State University’s Jaron LeGrair and Voices of YSU accompanied by Jack Ciarniello.

Youngstown youth will attend Youth in Government Program

(Photo by William D. Lewis | Mahoning Matters)
YOUNGSTOWN — My Brothers Keeper Youngstown Youth Academy will officially begin its youth leadership programming by participating in the Ohio Youth in Government Program at Camp Wilson in Marysville.
My Brothers Keeper is sponsored by the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence program in partnership with the YMCA of Youngstown.
The Youth in Government Program on Saturday is a day-long program to experience the process of House and Senate sessions and elections.
Youths in the program learn about the legislative process, how to write and research bills, and how to participate in elections. The work culminates in youths serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature. Some youths in the program have made bills to laws in the past.

Orchids and onions | News, Sports, Jobs

May 1, 2021
ORCHID: To the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley for setting a near-record in fundraising during the challenging pandemic-plagued year of 2020. At its in-person annual meeting in Poland this week, UW President Bob Hannon reported $3.38 million was raised last year — the second-highest total in its 101-year history. Those millions will benefit an array of community service organizations throughout the region at a time when assistance is more sorely needed than ever to survive the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
ORCHID: To Mark Matasic of Campbell for winning the Caregiver Hero Award from the American Stroke Association recently. Matasic stayed by his father Stephen’s side as an attentive caregiver 24/7 after Stephen suffered a debilitating stroke. After Stephen’s death, Mark became a passionate advocate for Survive Stroke, a national movement that calls for more streamlined treatment of stroke victims. Matasic also has lobbied in Columbus on stroke victims’ behalf. We congratulate Matasic and countless others in our community who make tremendous personal sacrifices to properly care for sick family and loved ones.

CLINTON COUNTY — Local law enforcement agencies are doing their part to actively meet and exceed standards from a state effort.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and Wilmington Police Department are among the many law enforcement agencies in the state to take part in the 2021 Ohio Collaborative Law Enforcement Certification Report.
Col. Brian Prickett of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office described the Collaborative as “an effort to keep agencies more professional and more accountable” in certain areas.

YOUNGSTOWN — Throughout the 1960s, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recognized how fluid, evolutionary and transformational the civil rights movement was and, many people contend, had the wisdom to adopt and shift his strategies with it for achieving a more just society.
For example, it was one thing for black people to gain the right to sit at what had been whites-only lunch counters, but another for them to have greater economic power to afford what was being served.
The movement continues to evolve today to include tackling disparities in access to health care and education, as well as unequal treatment by police, many say.
