Photo by Ingrid Christie Save restaurants and hospitality, few industries have been as hard hit during the global pandemic as performing arts. But a new season revealed by a beloved local arts purveyor suggests that Houston’s performances are finally returning in a big way.
Society for the Performing Arts released its 2021-2022 season, one full of familiar celebrities, big literary names, and cutting-edge artists. Some of the appearances are returns of rescheduled shows from the COVID-affected 2019-2020, while others are brand new events.
Time No Longer
Opening Day at Buffalo Bayou Cistern
Last month the Buffalo Bayou Cistern was the backdrop for rapper 21 Savageâs âRunninâ / Mr. Savageâ music video, which premiered on
The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last month. This weekend, the decommissioned reservoir becomes host to multidisciplinary artist Anri Salaâs newly commissioned work,Â
combines film projected on a large translucent screen, and a haunting new arrangement of Olivier Messiaenâs
Quartet for the End of Time, to create an experience thatâll probably make you feel like you arenât in some old Houston reservoir, but rather in another world entirely. You have until December 12 to experience the journey.
Although most of us have been yearning for a return to in-person events since the pandemic began, the wait is (hopefully) almost over and we can start looking forward to big events once more. On November 2, 2021, celebrity chef Alton Brown will be at the Jones Hall with his newest show,
Alton Brown Live: Beyond The Eats.Â
The event is being put on by the Society for the Performing Arts, and audience members will get to enjoy music, comedy, cooking demos and some âdangerous sciencey stuff with opportunities for audience interactions. âPlus, youâll see things Iâve never been allowed to do on TV,â Brown said in a release.  Â
