PRO-life campaigners have won High Court permission to challenge new powers allowing the secretary of state to direct the commissioning of abortion services in Northern Ireland.
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) was granted leave to seek a judicial review of regulations which give Brandon Lewis authority to step in.
Mr Justice Colton ruled today that an arguable case has been established and listed a full hearing for the end of this month.
The proceedings represent the latest stage in ongoing legal battles over Northern Ireland s abortion laws.
In 2019 MPs at Westminster liberalised the regime during a period when Stormont s power-sharing administration had collapsed. ....

Pressure is mounting on Holyrood to follow England’s example and require higher education providers in Scotland to promote free speech on their campuses.
Under the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill, universities and colleges in England could face fines if they fail in their new legal duties to protect and promote free speech.
According to The Times, politicians and academics in Scotland are calling for similar protections to be introduced by the Scottish Government.

Before March 2020, the number of abortions in conservative Northern Ireland in a given year consistently stayed in the double digits. Women could get legal abortions only if the pregnancy put their lives at risk or posed serious threat to their physical health. But the U.K. Parliament in October 2019 voted
to force Northern Ireland to legalize the procedure. The regulations officially passed on March 31, 2020.
Since then, staff at pro-life medical centers noticed an increase in women coming to them for help. They saw women coming out of healthcare facilities carrying their little brown bags of abortion pills. By March 2021, the region’s Department of Health announced that 1,345 abortions had taken place the previous year eve ....
