Ask Amy: New grandmother pushes family's boundaries | Lifestyles

Amy: My husband and I recently welcomed our first child.
On my side of the extended family, our baby son (“Samuel”) is the fifth grandchild, but on my husband’s side, he is the first.
I am trying to be sensitive to the excitement and extra attention a first grandchild receives.
My mother-in-law, “Joan,” has been to our house for a visit of a week’s duration each month since Sam’s birth. Each time she visits, I am more hesitant to welcome her back.
Joan is blatantly disregarding the parenting strategy my husband and I have adopted in favor of her own techniques. She does this against our specific instructions and without discussion. ....

Editor’s Note: This article is part of the multi-part series “Exiled to Indian Country” about the exile of Native Americans.
When the Euchee (often spelled Yuchi) tribe made first contact with the European colonizers, the members were located in settlements in eastern Tennessee, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society.
During the remainder of the 1600s, they traveled to the southeastern United States and established settlements neighboring the Creek Nation in Georgia and Alabama.
The United States did not differentiate the Euchee and the Creek, even though they spoke different languages. The two tribes were removed from the Southeast in 1830 and were given a land allotment in Oklahoma. ....

Conversation with the courts on April 6

Based in the Sixth Judicial District, the Iron Range Equal Justice Committee, in partnership with Voices for Ethnic and Multicultural Awareness, is hosting an upcoming listening session meant to cultivate relationships by talking about racial issues.
The event, named “Conversation with the Courts,” is scheduled to run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.
Seraphia Gravelle, a co-founder of VEMA, said over the phone Thursday that she was invited to join the committee “to bring people of color from the community to the tables to tell their stories in regards to their experiences with the justice system on every level.” She described how she agreed to join the event, because she thought “this was a great idea as far as citizens to understand the justice system and for people working in the system to hear their stories.” ....

The Red Sand Project: Taking a stand against modern-day slavery

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Red Sand Project has been bringing communities together to raise awareness of the dangers of human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
In 2021, instead of gathering together in the community, there are small pop-up events happening on March 31 and April 1 in Great Falls, Missoula and Billings.
Red sand is being spread in sidewalk cracks around the state to represent those that have fallen through the cracks of our society.
The Red Sand Project gives people the chance to question, connect, and take action against things that can lead to human trafficking.
The red sand is life. It s somebody’s life whose life was cut short or we can t find them, Joe Visser, the programming coordinator for the Juvenile Detention Center, said.  ....
