The mascot change was approved by the school board on Monday, June 21. The board approved the mascot change with a majority vote, according to School Board President Brad Weber.
Weber said The Storm was decided on by a committee made up of alumni, teachers, students and community members. They chose the new mascot and brought it to the board for approval. ....

Another Eastern Iowa School To Drop 'Indians' Nickname

Another Eastern Iowa school district will be dropping the nickname Indians as it s mascot. KCRG reports that the
Camanche Community School Board voted 5-1 to drop the use of the mascot by the end of this school year. The nickname Indians had been used at the school since they opened back in 1961.
The move comes after decades of recommendations from Native American groups and school agencies to address the nickname. KCRG reports that Camanche superintendent
Thomas Parker called the school mascot a stereotype. Many who spoke out during Monday night s meeting were in favor of keeping the nickname, saying that getting rid of it would just be another example of cancel culture. ....

On Monday evening, the Camanche school board voted to remove the school districts Indian mascot at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. According to KWQC, the school board voted 5-to-1 with one person not present to vote, to remove Indian as the mascot and nickname for the school.
The removal of the Indian mascot comes after several years of recommendations from school agencies and Native American groups to address and remove the mascot.
The Camanche School District has published a timeline of the use of the Indian mascot which references times teams at every level have removed and/or addressed the use of the Indiana mascot. In that timeline, they also reference times Camanche has been recommended to remove the mascot and has been called on by Native American groups to remove Indian as the mascot. ....
