Tumultuous Pleasure: 2020 in Review by Arley Sorg

Arley Sorg
As rough as the year has been for the country, it’s been a great time for reading. As if in response to the year itself, a slew of powerful books came out, expanding the scope of genre and engaging in conversations long overdue.
Tochi Onyebuchi’s
Riot Baby kicked things off in January, on the heels of his excellent late-2019 release
War Girls. The story follows Ella as her powers develop, and Kev, who was promising as a kid but ends up in prison. They negotiate their fragile relationship with each other and with their mother, who seems to seek to stifle Ella, all while the potential for Ella to accidentally hurt everyone around her increases. Ultimately, Ella has to figure out what to do with all that power. It’s a searing critique of systemic racism and the justice system, but it’s also a complex book about community, family, and anger. ....

Must-Read Speculative Short Fiction: January 2021

Ah, January! The start of a new year. Hope springs, life goes on, and new short speculative fiction appears in my inbox like magic. We have some returning favorites in this month’s spotlight and some brand new names. Lots of creepy fantasy and some distressing science fiction. Sorry to those looking for light and fluffy. This month, my ten picks are deep and dark.

I’m a sucker for anything Naomi Kanakia writes. From her brilliant young adult fiction to her equally as brilliant short speculative fiction, if she writes it, I will read it. “I Didn’t Buy It” is a disturbing story about the life (or not-life) of a robot. Reznikov’s first owner is abusive and cruel, while his second is patient and kind. But what does he think of all this? Perhaps everything. Perhaps nothing at all. ....

Arley Sorg Reviews The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror: Volume One, Edited by Paula Guran – Locus Online

Paula Guran started her
The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror series in 2010 with Prime Books. After working as a senior editor for Prime for seven years, Guran parted ways with the company and published the final installment in that series in 2019. Guran returns in 2020 with no time to spare, restarting the series at volume one with new publisher Pyr – a company which, coincidentally, had also seen some major changes: they were sold by Prometheus Books in 2018 and picked up by Start Media. Despite being slightly trimmer than previous volumes,
The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror: Volume One stays true to form, presenting an excellent assortment of work, drawing from best-selling and award-winning authors established outside of dark fantasy and horror, such as Pat Cadigan, Maria Dahvana Headley, Ellen Klages, Ken Liu, Carmen Maria Machado, Joyce Carol Oates, Sarah Pinsker, and Fran Wilde; as well as authors who will excite the horror and dark fantasy fans, such ....

6 Books for Your February 2021 Reading List

Not much more than a dozen pages into
The Blade Between, the protagonist, Ronan Szepessy, thinks to himself, What the hell happened to Hudson?
What the hell happened to Hudson, indeed. That could well be an alternative title for Sam J. Miller s terrific new novel. Substitute the name of any large town or small city (or big city?) in America for Hudson in that sentence, and much (but certainly not all) in Miller s gripping story will ring true. The question remains, just who is besieging Hudson? Hipster invaders? Greedy developers? Fancy shop owners? Or perhaps the disturbed, tortured souls of the whales that were processed there 250 years ago? ....
