During previous town halls, Asplen, along with other senior leaders from the School District, have solicited feedback from constituents and allowed citizens to raise concerns during open-microphone feedback sessions.
The district has held four town halls already, geared at specific geographic regions within the county. Wednesday’s event is more of a community-wide outreach, with the district inviting representatives from the business, philanthropic and real estate communities.
District spokesman Craig Maniglia said roughly 1,000 to 1,200 people have attended the previous events.
Community members have had the chance to sound off on a range of issues, including the district’s mask policy and how the district addresses hot-button racial and religious issues. The district also asks attendees to bring smart phone so they can answer survey questions and provide the district with real-time feedback. ....

However, Hoffman argues that under Florida law it is the schools’ responsibility and not a law enforcement duty.
As he is trying to boost deputy pay to entice more recruits into the field, the quarter-million-dollar crossing guard contract stood out as one natural place to cut, especially since the district started its own police force instead of using Sheriff’s Office deputies in schools.
Hoffman’s letter listed dozens of services the Sheriff’s Office still provides at no cost to the school district. This includes providing detectives for felony crimes, the bomb squad and K9 unit, use of the forensic drug laboratory, crime scene technicians, 911 dispatch services and multi-agency active shooter training. ....

The superintendent described a year with unprecedented challenges, including the requirement for teachers to simultaneously teach children attending in-person classes and students watching from home on their computers.
“When I visited a few of your classrooms and tried to do (concurrent teaching) myself, it’s very difficult because you always have to be thinking about it all the time,” Asplen said. “So hats off to our teachers.”
That new requirement came at the same time as district staff had to start contact tracing any student who may have been exposed to the virus, teachers had to remind students to wear their masks throughout the day and custodial staff had to do constant deep cleaning and sanitizing. ....
