Despite a mediated resolution earlier this year, a late tax payment is prolonging tensions between the botanical garden and the property appraiser.
Jennifer Rominiecki and Bill Furst haven’t publicly agreed on much since 2019, but they share the same outlook on at least one thing: They’re not happy with the outcome of an April 19 Value Adjustment Board meeting that failed to bring closure to a long-standing dispute over the tax-exempt status of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ bayfront property.
Rominiecki, Selby’s president and CEO, and Furst, the Sarasota County property appraiser, have spent more than a year debating whether some or all of Selby’s land should be subject to property taxes. Rominiecki claimed the property appraiser was overturning years of precedence and targeting standard operations for a nonprofit. A vocal critic of local government played a key role in denying the request, an outcome city officials described as highly unusual.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District gave high marks to the city’s plans to build an 18-acre wetland to improve the quality of water discharging into Sarasota Bay.
In its assessment of the project, SWFWMD staff said the project’s treatment of runoff from a 5,800-acre watershed would remove a significant amount of nutrients from water entering the bay.
A report said the project was cost effective and in line with the governor’s directive to prioritize projects that will mitigate harmful algal blooms. Staff deemed the project a high priority for a $1.5 million grant. ....

Marlon Brown, 57, was appointed interim city manager in December following Tom Barwin’s retirement. The City Commission expressed a desire to make his promotion permanent, with a vote on a full-time contract set for the board’s Jan. 19 meeting. Brown had served as deputy city manager since 2009.
