Workers begin to clear a path for trail


SARANAC LAKE — Jim McCulley of Lake Placid, working for National Salvage, used a machine to unbolt railroad tracks Friday morning in Saranac Lake, near the Cedar Street crossing.
Another National Salvage worker said the rails could be removed with an excavator as soon as this week.
McCulley, a snowmobiler, was for many years a leading advocate for the now-underway plan to replace the tracks with a trail for biking, snowmobiling and other uses. He said he was especially enjoying the removal.
New York state, which owns the tracks, is replacing the rails with a trail between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid and started the replacement work at the Tupper Lake end last year. ....

MDOT: I-96 improvements coming to Kent, Ionia counties

WEST MICHIGAN Interstate-96 improvements will begin Friday, April 23, in Kent and Ionia counties, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. 
Work will start Friday, April 23, and is expected to end July 1.  
MDOT announced weekend lane closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Monday on I-96 from M-11 to Thornapple River Drive.
Weekday lane closures will be in place on I-96 from Montcalm Avenue to Bliss Road 6 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Friday. 
The closest cities are Grand Rapids and Saranac. 
MDOT is investing $4 million to make concrete pavement repairs and resurface I-96 from M-11 (28th Street) to Thornapple River Drive in Kent County, and from the Kent/Ionia county line (Montcalm Avenue) to Bliss Road in Ionia County.    ....

SARANAC LAKE The Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors announced Thursday that Executive Director Kate Fish will retire later this year, after nearly 12 years leading the organization.
The regional economic development nonprofit has launched a nationwide search to fill the position.
“Kate is leaving a lasting legacy at ANCA and Adirondack North Country,” board President Jim Sonneborn said in a press release. “Her vision and bias toward action have helped ANCA become a real leader in sustainable economic development. ANCA’s Clean Energy Program and Center for Businesses in Transition are models for other rural areas, and we have Kate’s innovative thinking to thank for that.” ....
