A year ago, we talked with a fifteen-year-old named Camilo, who lived with his mother and two siblings in a shelter with no Internet. The family shared one unreliable laptop and one cell phone. When they spent a night at the home of friends, to use their Wi-Fi, the shelter kicked them out. Last week, Camilo brought us up to date.
We still don’t have Wi-Fi, but I have a school iPad that has service. Last spring, we moved to a shelter on the Lower East Side. I didn’t like it because I had to share a room, and I need my own space. But I liked the vibe. It was a good neighborhood, next to East River Park. I had a place to jog. I had a place to feed the birds. ....

In response to an Instagram post promoting her new book Checking In , a follower wrote: Michelle I love you but you need some children. u r 2 bored (sic)
However, Michelle wasted no time in firing back.
She said: You re an idiot!!!!! (sic)
The follower responded by writing: Woooooooow that was uncalled for thank you (sic) ....

In late March, mere weeks into the pandemic that we ve carried into another year, Music Editor Raoul Hernandez launched a Q&A series with local musicians. He called it Checking In, a name that carried special resonance for him. It was directly inspired by the language we were all using in those disorienting first days of COVID-19, when the days were full of worried calls and texts and emails:
I just wanted to check in.
I ve always viewed journalism as social work, he told me on Monday, as we hung around after a meeting in the Zoom room where we all live now.
