Centenarian Joe Newman dies, leaves a 108-year legacy

Newman was born in Chicago in 1913 and moved to South Bend, Indiana when his father got a job working at Studebaker an American automobile company.
He graduated from Notre Dame in 1936 and was recently honored with the 2019 Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was the oldest living Notre Dame alumnus.
After college, Newman married his first wife Sophie and had his only child, Rita Jo. She was severely impaired during birth, struggled with many challenges in life and died at age 27.
Newman and his wife helped found the Logan School for Retarded Children in South Bend in 1950. They opened the school for 22 isolated, mentally challenged students. It is now the Logan Center and serves children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ....
