Last November, David Seidel started going out paddling on his surfboard as a way to improve his fitness on days there was no surf.
It s fair to say he achieved that goal, as six months
later he found himself paddling across the Cook Strait.

A lone fin breached the surface of the water about 20 feet away from me. Angular and fast-moving, it was the unmistakable sight of a shark in pursuit. The fin disappeared, making me think my mind was playing tricks on me in the early morning hours, before popping up again slightly farther away.
I was a thousand percent sure it was a shark. Definitely a juvenile, but a shark all the same.
Riding one wave and calling it quits was the complete opposite of how I planned to spend my morning. I put a lot of effort into waking up and dragging myself down to the beach, so this teenage predator was becoming much more nuisance than threat. So, I did what any sane person would do – lifted my feet out of the water and kept surfing. ....

In the past decade 360 people have ventured out to our beaches and never returned home - and sadly the number of people drowning continues to rise each year.
A new report out today reveals 42 people lost their lives on the coast last year, nearly a quarter of whom were out swimming or wading in the water.
The Surf Life Saving National Beach and Coastal Safety report found beach and coastal-related fatal drownings have climbed almost 20 per cent in the last five years with the country s 10-year average now almost 50 per cent greater than Australia s per capita. ....
