'Ghost Trap Rodeo' lassoes marine debris

The eyes of Carrabelle’s Fishy Fashion Show, an annual event showcasing outfits made from reclaimed marine debris, would have opened wide as claws had they seen the haul brought in earlier this month to Apalachicola’s Battery Park.
The kickoff event for the 2021-22 Ghost Trap Rodeo series, a search-and-rubbish marine disposal effort organized by a St. Petersburg-based non-profit, brought into Battery Park on Jan. 9 about 5,000 pounds of trash collected from in and around Apalachicola Bay.
It was the largest single-day haul for the rodeo, which originated in Tampa Bay in 2018-19, and in the seven rodeos since then has accumulated about 26,400 pounds of trash. ....

Chasing Shadows: Carrabelle becomes a town on Christmas Eve

Editor’s note: This is Part 1 of a two-part series on the founding of Carrabelle.
In 1877, a real estate developer from Minnesota named Oliver Hudson Kelley set up a tent on the east side of the river where the Crooked and New Rivers joined and emptied into Apalachicola Sound. He moved in his wife and four daughters and declared himself the mayor. He began immediately to organize a community named “Rio Carrabella.”
Kelley used his Masonic and Grange connections to meet local businessmen and landowners and to recruit wealthy Yankees in the lumber and the railroad businesses to move to James Island in Franklin County. He became a regular correspondent for the Weekly Floridian newspaper, published every two weeks in Tallahassee, where he posted his” James Island Letters” touting the excellent virtues of St. James Island where Carrabelle is located. If Franklin County is going to have its say in the Florida legislature this spring, the two people who led the delegation hearing Tuesday night are going to voice it.
State Rep. Jason Shoaf, his first time as senior member of the duo, sat in front of a small audience in the commission chambers, together with newly elected state senator, Loranne Ausley, who was appearing for the first time in her new role.
