When Lani Rye learned that a Merritt man had hanged himself less than a day after being placed in the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, the memories came flooding back.
Like Billy Strande, who died on Nov. 19, 2020, her son, Shawn Earle, was suffering from severe mental illness when he took his life in Surrey Pretrial in January 1997.

Makayla Sandve identifies as a woman.
As such, Sandve wanted to be moved out of the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre.
Surrey Pretrial is a jail for men awaiting court trials.
After identifying as female by gender, Sandve repeatedly requested to be transferred to the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women (ACCW).
However, B.C. Corrections refused.
This happened despite the agency’s transgender policy that allows it to do a prison transfer based on gender identity.
Sandve believes that the rejection constituted discrimination based on gender identity, gender expression and sex contrary to the B.C. Human Rights Code. ....

Men in Surrey treatment and recovery centre learn how to knit together

Instead, they use a loom to knit yarn together. It’s called looming.
“At first I thought, ‘People are going to think I’m weird or whatever,’” Mendonca said.
“Once I started knitting in public, I didn’t really care what people think. I enjoy doing it and I’m going to do it.”
Far from being ostracized, Mendonca has created a new activity at the treatment and recovery centre which helps women and men break the cycle of addiction and homelessness.
As many as 10 men at a time are now looming. They’ve made about 200 toques, which have ended up as gifts to loved ones and as donations to a women’s recovery house. They want other toques to go to the homeless and to babies in hospital once the pandemic is over. ....
