Wilderness campaign aims to Keep the U.P. Wild

More than 60 organizations and businesses throughout Michigan have united to
Keep the U.P. Wild.
The group wants a wilderness designation for four pieces of public land in the U.P. The designation would make the Trap Hills, Elcho Area, Norwich Plains, and an extension of the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area federally protected.
“The past year has shown that people value wilderness,” said Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition President Horst Schmidt. “We need to have green in our lives.”
Wilderness designation helps preserve the land and can benefit states’ economies as well.
The International Journal of Wilderness says more than 9 billion dollars can be attributed to these wilderness areas nationwide. ....

NISKAYUNA After quitting the state Adirondack Park Agency board in frustration, wilderness advocate Chad Dawson has joined the board of Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve, one of the park’s environmental groups.
Dawson, of Onondaga County, is a professor emeritus at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, teaching and researching there from 1989 to 2011, and before that for 15 years at Cornell University and the University of Minnesota. He is the former managing editor of the International Journal of Wilderness and co-wrote two textbooks with John Hendee: “Wilderness Management: Stewardship and Protection of Resources and Values” and “Introduction to Forests and Renewable Resources.” ....

ALBANY Chad Dawson, the Adirondack Park Agency board member who resigned late last year out of frustration with the agency and state Department of Environmental Conservation, has taken a new position with an environmental advocacy group.
Dawson, a leading expert on natural resource management, was elected Tuesday to the board of directors for Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve. The professor emeritus of recreation resources management at the state University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, will focus on planning management in forest preserve, including the Adirondack and Catskill parks, according to a news release. ....
