International Workers' Memorial Day takes on extra poignancy in Bolton

International Workers Memorial Day 2021
A MINUTE S silence was held in Victoria Square at 11am today to mark International Workers Memorial Day, which took on extra poignancy this year.
A social distanced service was organised by Unison and this year the key workers who had lost their lives while caring for others during the pandemic were very much in the thoughts of those gathered.
The flag at the town hall was lowered in tribute to those who have died.
Representatives from Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Royal Bolton Hospital, where among those paying their respects.
They lit rainbow candles following the silence in memory of those they have lost. ....

Today marks International Workers Memorial Day.
Minister for Industrial Relations and Workplace Safety Mick Gentleman said the day was an important time to remember those who have died at work, or from workplace related injury and illness
“Every one of these people has a family who love them, friends who mourn them, and colleagues who miss them,” Minister Gentleman said.
“Today we especially remember the thousands of frontline workers who have died due to the global COVID19 pandemic and recognise the significant impact of the pandemic on workers physical and mental wellbeing.

Covid: Expert calls for occupational health body to tackle workplace health failings

COVID has exposed UK failures on health and safety at work – and now a leading expert has called for an independent occupational health body to be established for Scotland.
This would be properly resourced and staffed with effective representation at board level for workers and their unions, employers, local authorities and communities, according to Professor Andrew Watterson.
