Consultation launched on extending world-leading elephant ivory ban
Following a Call for Evidence the proposed species include hippos, narwhals, walruses, killer whales and sperm whales
Public, industry and stakeholders are urged to share their views
Hippos, walruses and killer whales are just some of the ivory-bearing species that could be afforded greater protections under new proposals being consulted on by the Government from today (17 July).
As laid out in our Action Plan for Animal Welfare, the proposals would see the UK’s landmark Ivory Act, which will bring in a near-total ban on the import, export and dealing of items containing elephant ivory in the UK when it comes into effect, extended to other ivory-bearing species. ....

Hippos, walruses and whales could receive greater legal protection under UK government proposals to crack down on ivory poaching.
Ministers want to extend the Ivory Act because they say elephants are not the only animals at risk.
Conservationists have welcomed the move as sending a clear signal to the rest of the world .
Boris Johnson has previously announced that funding to tackle the illegal wildlife trade will be increased.
Now the environment department says it needs to go further.

New protections for hippos and whales under Government ivory-ban proposals

Hippos, walruses and whales could receive greater legal protection under Government proposals to extend the ivory ban.
Under the plans, the Ivory Act would be broadened to cover other ivory-bearing animals.
Currently, the law, which is yet to come into effect, covers the import, export and dealing in items containing elephant ivory.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which is launching a consultation on the extension, said elephants are not the only animal sought for their ivory.

EU countries could soon be required to take biodiversity seriously, following Brussels vote


The European Union has been urged to implement legally binding targets to protect biodiversity.
515 MEPs voted on Tuesday to adopt a new ambitious biodiversity strategy that includes calls for 30 per cent of the EU’s land and sea to be protected by 2030. 605 MEPs voted in total, with 90 voting against and 86 abstaining.
“We are very satisfied with the outcome,” says Spanish MEP César Luena, who wrote the report. “Besides having secured a majority to endorse the main targets of the Commission’s strategy, we have also gained support for our ambitious legislative proposals, particularly our call for a European Biodiversity Law.” ....
