For the first time, scientists 'see' black holes swallowing neutron stars

New Delhi: In a first, an international team of scientists, including researchers from India, have confirmed the detection of a collision between a black hole and a neutron star, by analysing the gravitational waves created by two such events in January last year.
Gravitational waves are ripples in the space-time fabric created by extreme events, such as the collision of two blackholes or two neutron stars. While gravitational waves from several such collisions have been detected since the first discovery in 2015, they have all been a result of collision between similar cosmic bodies.
However, now the team has determined that these waves detected last January were a result of a neutron star being swallowed whole by its black hole partner.

The cosmic bodies have come out of their historical isolation to take centrestage in modern astrophysics, says the recipient of the inaugural young scientist award instituted by The World Academy of Sciences
Parameswaran Ajith, 40, a Bengaluru-based astrophysicist who specialises in the study of detecting gravitational waves, was chosen as the first recipient of The World Academy of Sciences-Chinese Academy of Sciences (TWAS-CAS) Young Scientist award for Frontier Science. He talks about his prize, the excitement of black holes, and about how he chose to become a scientist. Excerpts:
The award citation says you have “...pioneered a method to model the expected gravitational-wave signals from colliding binary black holes.” In layman’s terms, could you explain the principle of this method? Is it the only method for detecting wave signals or is it part of an algorithm of detection?

Bengaluru: A Keralite scientist has been selected for the World Academy of Science award. Malappuram Melattur native Dr Ajith Parameswaran, physicist at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (ICTS-TIFR) in Bengaluru, won the international recognition.
The World Academy of Science headquartered in Italy gives the award to young scientists from developing countries. Dr Ajith Parameswaran played a key role in predicting the gravitational waves during a collision between two black holes.

For a scientist, few things are sweeter than data from an experiment that confirms a theoretical prediction.
Frequently, however, scientists don't live long enough to savor that reward. Take Albert Einstein's prediction about gravitational waves. Einstein postulated their existence in 1916, but they weren't detected until a hundred years later, long after the great physicist had died.
C.V. Vishveshwara was one of the lucky ones. He got to enjoy what Einstein had missed, and the detection of gravitational waves verified a theoretical prediction that Vishveshwara himself had made nearly half a century earlier.
