East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been recognised for its dedication in supporting the development of the East Riding Food Poverty Alliance and the actions to tackle a rise in food poverty in the area during the coronavirus pandemic.

The East Riding Food Poverty Alliance (ERFPA) – a partnership of food banks and pantries – was set up in June 2020, after food banks witnessed an increase in residents requiring food vouchers since the start of the pandemic. ....

Art replaces graffiti on York's Love Lane bridge

The
A LOCAL artist and community group have brightened up a York footbridge as part of a wider project to tackle graffiti.
Network Rail said graffiti was unpleasant but cleaning it cost millions of pounds and staff had had to paint over graffiti on Love Lane bridge over the East Coast Main Line multiple times.
It had therefore commissioned East Riding Voluntary Action Services and artist Emma Garness to design and paint artwork for the bridge, which included mallard ducks to represent the nearby nature reserve, Hob Moor.
Emma said painting the 40 metre footbridge had been a breath of fresh air. ....

St Nicks employs mentor to support young 'green influencers'

St Nicks, Rawdon Avenue in York, has secured funding for a green mentor to work with young people.
A NATURE reserve has received a cash boost to help encourage young people in York to become green influencers .
St Nicks Centre for Nature and Green Living will receive £18,000 annually for the next two years from the Ernest Cook Trust educational charity to support the employment of a green mentor.
The new post will enable children, aged 10 to 14, across the city to follow in Greta Thunberg’s footsteps and get involved in community social action projects.
Freya Lovett, who will take on the green mentor role, will work with young people on projects to protect and enhance the local environment and tackle climate change. ....

Artwork celebrates village's community spirit and aims to halt railway graffiti

A young resident approached Network Rail with ideas for brightening up the barriers on Temple Lane.
Artist Emma Garness and East Riding Voluntary Action Services were tasked with designing the mural.
Emma said: “I was thrilled when asked to design and deliver this mural for Network Rail and the wonderful village of Copmanthorpe. I was shown a great deal of support and encouragement from the people in the village, a sure sign of a healthy community.
Network Rail hopes the artwork will also deter vandalism - saving time and money usually lost to cleaning off graffiti.
Paul Rutter from the organisation said: “Our teams spend valuable time cleaning and covering graffiti – but unfortunately this creates a blank canvas for the crime. We often have to return to the same site when it’s targeted again, so I hope this piece will make others think twice before doing graffiti on the bridge. ....
