Ithaca foundation boosts job seekers' connectivity during COVID-19

A grant from the J.M. McDonald Foundation has been enabling Challenge Workforce Solutions to deliver remote job readiness services to participants who are staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Founded in 1968 in Ithaca, New York, Challenge is dedicated to creating pathways to employment for people with disabilities and other barriers.
J.M. McDonald was a retail executive and dairy cattle breeder who settled in Cortland, New York in the 1920s. Shortly before his death in 1956, he established a trust that continues to award grants to various charitable causes primarily in Upstate New York.
The foundation’s grant to Challenge was used to purchase tablets and hotspots for job seekers without reliable, dedicated internet access at their residence. Challenge was able to fulfill all requests for hardware, ensuring full involvement in valuable programming throughout all the phases of lockdown. ....

A new challenge: Joe Sammons prepares to take over at Hospicare


ITHACA, NY Joe Sammons will continue serving residents of Tompkins and Cortland Counties as the eighth executive director of Hospicare & Palliative Care Services.
 Sammons, who succeeds Kimberly De Rosa, is scheduled to join Hospicare Feb. 15. Former County Administrator Joe Mareane stepped in as interim executive director after De Rosa left the nonprofit in September 2020.
 The Board of Directors of Hospicare made the announcement earlier this month. Betsy East, president of the Hospicare Board of Directors, said Sammons has a strong background in managing community-based nonprofit health organizations such as Hospicare. 
  We’re so excited that Joe has agreed to join us,” East said. “He has such extensive experience in healthcare leadership and has been successful in leading all of those organizations forward with strategic thinking and great listening.” ....

A grant from the Community Foundation of Tompkins County has enabled Challenge Workforce Solutions to provide enhanced cleaning services to Foodnet Meals on Wheels as they ramp up food delivery to seniors in need.
Established in 1967, Foodnet has provided meals and nutrition services that promote dignity, well-being, and independence for older adults and others in need. Since COVID-19 emerged as an unprecedented threat to physical and fiscal health particularly for lower-income seniors the agency has seen a surge in demand. “We have delivered at least 25,000 more meals than usual this year, including 9,000 frozen meals at the beginning of the pandemic so all our clients had an emergency supply,” Operations Manager Art Webb said. ....
