The construction of Southland Charity Hospital is beginning on Thursday - a significant milestone coinciding with what would have been Blair Vining s 41st birthday.
The Southland Charity Hospital Trust was formed in 2019 following Vining s battle with terminal bowel cancer. After his diagnosis in 2018, the father-of-two was told he had just weeks to live - and due to the severely under-resourced health services in Southland, it was unlikely he would be able to see a specialist before the cancer took his life. ....

Timaru wool scour helping southern charity hospital

“They were having a buy a brick campaign for the hospital, so I thought, ‘we’ve got wool, why not use it?’.”
The #BalesforBlair fundraiser began with farmers, merchants and others around the South Island, including some from South Canterbury, and several from the North Island donating wool.
More than 400 bales have been donated so far, all of which would eventually be scoured free of charge.

Southland Charity Hospital offering services months ahead of opening

Reddy said she was fascinated by the Vining family s story and Melissa s ability to turn a tragic situation into something for the benefit of the community.
The pressures of modern society meant there would always be unmet health needs, she said, and she did not think there was anywhere in the world that did not need the help the charity hospital would provide.
Reflecting on her term, Reddy said she was proud of the state of New Zealand.
Considering environmental and geopolitical challenges elsewhere in the world, she said: “I look around, and I think: where else would I rather be?” ....
