The federal environment minister is urging Saskatchewan to rethink its new electric vehicle fee in a letter penned to Premier Scott Moe.
Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said he wished to raise his “concern” about the decision, announced in the provincial budget last week. The fee will cost electric vehicle owners $150 per year. The provincial government said it will ensure “tax fairness” with other drivers, who pay a gas tax to support highway maintenance.

An environmental economist is joining climate-conscious drivers across Saskatchewan to criticize a $150-fee on electric vehicles as a disincentive to go green.
Brett Dolter, who specializes in climate change policy at the University of Regina, said countries around the world are increasingly seeing electric vehicles as “key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” Saskatchewan, by contrast, lacks any policy to reduce transportation emissions.
