By Eric Starkman
Jay Greene
It’s challenging to be gracious to someone who publicly and privately disparaged my work, but I’m going to put my ego aside and acknowledge that the retirement of Jay Greene of Crain’s Detroit Business is a loss to Michigan health care journalism.
Greene has been covering health care for so long that I suspect Hippocrates was one of his sources. He’s spent the last 13 years at Crain’s Detroit, and before that covered nonprofits for Crain’s Modern Healthcare, an industry bible. Greene’s institutional health care knowledge is unrivaled, not only in Michigan but across the country. He’s a stickler for detail, his reporting painstakingly accurate. ....

BRIGHTON, Mich. (May 12, 2021) The
Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council (MBIPC), which represents the state s highly trained professionals who provide specialized brain injury rehabilitation, has fact-checked a statement released by Rep.
Mary Whiteford (Casco Township) related to auto no-fault reform.
In the statement, Rep. Whiteford says: When someone was injured in a car accident a year ago, or 20 years ago, and had unlimited lifetime coverage, they are entitled to that coverage.
The truth is that while thousands of injured residents may be entitled to coverage, their benefits will be useless unless HB 4486 and SB 314 are passed. Without them, the 45% slash in reimbursement rates for specialized rehabilitation services will devastate access to care, leaving thousands of patients with nowhere to go. ....

In what one hopes is the final chapter in the strange saga of former Rep. Todd Courser s political career, The Detroit News prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against the paper, and will collect $20,000.
Editor Gary Miles said the money would be donated to the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation.

The case has its roots in Courser s downfall in 2015. That s when the paper first broke the story that the Lapeer Republican had asked his staff to spread a rumor that Courser was partying in Lansing gay bars. His apparent aim was to start an outrageous story circulating in hopes that when true rumors began to circulate that Courser was having an affair with his fellow Tea Party darling Cindy Gamrat that he could easily dismiss both. Courser, on audio recordings obtained by the paper, called the strategy a controlled burn.   ....

Detroit News receives $20K in settlement with ex-Rep. Courser, lawyer

Former Republican Lapeer area state Rep. Todd Courser and his lawyer agreed on Monday to pay The Detroit News $20,000 in a settlement agreement that concludes a nearly three-year defamation lawsuit.
Under the agreement, the DePerno Law Office, which represented Courser, agreed to pay $20,000 via a wire transfer to The News by 5 p.m. Monday.
The agreement came about two years after Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Timothy Connors dismissed the defamation lawsuit against The News and ordered Courser and DePerno to pay $79,701.63 in sanctions related to the suit. Courser and Matthew DePerno had appealed to the Michigan Court of Appeals, where arguments were set to take place Tuesday. ....

Why It's Time To Reform or Repeal Michigan's Bottle Return Law

Chad Livengood of Crain’s Detroit Business says without changes, bottle returns and recycling will continue to decline.
In 1976, the state of Michigan approved the “bottle bill,” attaching a 10-cent deposit to returned bottles and cans. The act was introduced to prevent littering and encourage recycling, but in recent years rates of bottle returns have gone down.
“We kind of dump this job on the retail market. And over time, a lot of people aren’t taking them back, they’re just dumping them in their single-stream recycling bin … or they just throw them in the trash.” Chad Livengood, Crain’s Detroit Business ....
