PVTA lands $7.2M grant for energy-efficient vehicles >Published: 6/30/2021 1:56:15 PM
NORTHAMPTON – The area’s public transit system will soon be home to eight new battery-electric buses, thanks to a $7.2 million federal grant. State and local officials announced this week that the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) received the grant to help it lower emissions by replacing some of its gas-powered buses.
Once the new energy-efficient vehicles arrive in 2022, the PVTA will have a total of 23 electric buses in its 180-bus fleet.
The authority has a goal of cutting emissions in half by 2050 and hopes to receive more financial assistance to help it reach that goal. The authority serves 24 cities and towns in Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin counties.

MGM Resorts President of the Northeast Group Chris Kelley officially announced at an event in Forest Park that the casino is donating 200 tickets to Springfield’s winter holiday attraction Bright Nights to frontline workers from American Medical Response and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority in appreciation of all their efforts during the pandemic.
“We’re so grateful to AMR and the PVTA frontline workers and this is just a small token of our appreciation. We hope it helps them and their families celebrate the holiday season,” said Kelley. “Bright Nights is such a wonderful Springfield tradition. A huge thank you to the Spirit of Springfield, especially this year when we all need a little extra holiday joy.”
