Santa Maria elementary students participate in milk taste test

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Summer school students in Santa Maria participate in a unique test on Friday.
Third graders at Robert Bruce Elementary School were asked to taste varieties of milk from dairy vendors bidding for a new contract with the Santa Maria-Bonita School District.
The students sat socially distanced and indicated whether they liked or disliked each milk on a sheet with either a smiley face or a sad face.
There are three different companies that we are considering for a bid, so it is very important for us to make sure that whatever we have for the kids the kids approve, so they will be tasting some milk today, said Carlos Murta with Santa Maria-Bonita Food Services. ....

Santa Maria elementary teachers rally amid contract impasse

Santa Maria Bonita teachers rally for improved conditions.
SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Dozens of teachers rallied in Santa Maria Wednesday as their union tries to come to an agreement on working conditions with the Santa Maria Bonita Bonita School District.
They say the district has put forth a number of proposals that call for additional required duties beyond a normal workday. They point to a 20 percent increase in the number of classes for junior high teachers.
Members of the Santa Maria Elementary Education Association feel the district s proposals undermine their efforts in the last year during the pandemic. ....

United Way distributes 380,000 masks to dozens of nonprofits on the Central Coast

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - United Way is making a big delivery.
There are 379,500 masks that are going to be distributed to our communities, said president and CEO Eddie Taylor of the United Way of Santa Barbara County.
Taylor said it s all thanks to the organization’s partnership with Good360.
It’s an international product distribution organization. We were able to leverage this purchase through them, said Taylor.
That purchase was distributed at the new Toyota of Santa Maria location to charities, school districts, and more on Friday.
We are very excited to be here today for the Cover California for masking and letting people know that it’s important to respect and protect our community, said Executive Director Tracy Beard of Solvang Chamber of Commerce. ....
