BAMC suspends elective surgeries as COVID threat grows

Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio said Tuesday it’s suspending elective surgeries as worsening conditions trigger restrictions for civilian medical facilities under orders issued by Gov. Greg Abbott.
BAMC said it would temporarily delay some elective surgeries, particularly those requiring an overnight stay.
“These are non-life-threatening surgeries,” BAMC spokesman Bob Whetstone said. “If somebody has to have a bypass, that’s going to happen.” ....

Army Capt. Rebecca Parrish, an Army nurse who has been serving on the frontlines of health care since the pandemic began, was among a small group of frontline medical professionals who received the first Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines at BAMC.
I m ready to eradicate this virus, said Parrish, a COVID-19 intensive care unit nurse.
After Air Force Senior Airman Marisol Salgado administered Parrish s shot, a round of applause broke out in the room.
This is a historic moment for BAMC, said Army Col. Michael Wirt, deputy commanding officer. We are excited to launch this program today, focusing on our frontline staff, and look forward to expanding it to additional BAMC clinical and support teams in the days ahead. ....

COVID-19 surge spurs readiness efforts at Brooke Army Medical Center


With COVID-19 cases on the rise across the nation, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas is bracing for the impact of the coming winter months as colder weather drives people indoors where the virus is more likely to spread.
Equipped with lessons learned, BAMC is preparing to shift resources and personnel to ensure hospital readiness in the event of a patient increase. On the preventive front, leaders continue to underscore the importance of safety measures such as hand washing, face coverings, personal protective equipment and physical distancing.
The ability to remain flexible and agile, while ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality care, has been vital since the start of the pandemic, Army Brig. Gen. Shan Bagby, BAMC commanding general, noted. SAN ANTONIO Frontline heroes in San Antonio are getting coronavirus vaccines this week.
Shipments of the Pfizer vaccine started arriving in the Alamo City Monday. The San Antonio Military Health System is one of the 150 sites across the country vaccinating medical workers after receiving a shipment of the vaccine. 
Health care workers and first responders comprise the highest-priority tier of recipients, and were injected with the initial doses. Those vaccinated on Monday and Tuesday are in contact with patients on a daily basis. ....
