Cherokee, Iowa If you go outside Monday evening and see a bright object in the sky, it will probably actually be two planets lined up behind each other.
Colloquially, it’s being called “the Christmas Star,” but Linda Burkhart, the director of the Sanford Museum and Planetarium in Cherokee tells us that it’s really not a star at all.
(as said:) “It’s called a planet conjunction and they appear to, from our viewpoint, from Earth… They appear to come together in our viewing sky. Planet conjunctions happen and it’s not an unusual event really but this particular one is a bit unusual because Jupiter and Saturn will appear to look like one light with your unaided eye if you look through a telescope, you’d see a bit of separation between the two planets and remember that they’re different distances. So they’re not really that close together. They’re just… in their orbits…. They happen to line up with us as we’re looking at the ....
