Henry County's Ananya Augustine to compete for Georgia's top speller

ATLANTA â A Henry County middle school student is among 20 championship finalists who will compete later this month in the Georgia Association of Educatorsâ State Spelling Bee.
Normally this time of year, itâs announced that students will soon be spelling words like âdevitrification,â âjotnian,â and âreascendancy.â This year students, including Ananya Augustine, a seventh-grader from Eagleâs Landing Middle School, will be competing through computer clicks. Augustine was last yearâs state runner-up.
The challenges that COVID-19 has presented in Georgiaâs public school classrooms, by association, have also made this past year challenging for those participating in their local and county spelling bees. The Scripps National Spelling Bee did provide a virtual platform in late 2020 for those schools and systems that could not hold their bees in-person. There were some technical glitches and platform anxiety all the way ....

The 49th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race concluded with a familiar winner and a record-tying finish.
Musher Dallas Seavey won his record-tying fifth Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race championship on Monday by crossing the finish line at 5:08 am Alaska Daylight Time.
The veteran musher crossed the finish line in seven days, 14 hours, eight minutes and 57 seconds with 10 dogs in harness.
Dallas Seavey s win in Iditarod 49 epitomizes the grit, determination and perseverance for which our race is synonymous, said Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach said in a statement.
This year, teams were challenged unlike ever before, which included traversing the notorious Dalzell Gorge and Alaska Range twice, and Dallas showed incredible adaptability with being able to excel in arctic camping, strategic run timing and dog whispering in concert with our stringent COVID-19 protocols. Congratulations to Dallas and we thank Iditarod Nation for their support this year. ....

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WSFA) - Jackson State bested the Alabama State women’s basketball team at Saturday’s Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.
The Tigers flexed their muscles early and often, pushing to a 37-24 lead at halftime. The Hornets found themselves down 17 with just four minutes remaining in the third quarter but came back to take the lead late in the fourth.
However, Jackson State scored late, ultimately winning the game 67-66.
Alabama State (15-4) trailed 46-29 with 4:44 remaining in the third, trimming the deficit down to just four points in that same period before Jackson State pushed the lead back to nine in the fourth quarter at 59-50. ....

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSFA) - A second half comeback on Saturday ensured that the Alabama men’s basketball team is heading to the SEC Tournament Championship for the first time since 2002.
The No. 6/5 Crimson Tide came back from a 15-point deficit in the second half and pulled off a 73-68 win over No. 4 seed Tennessee in the 2021 SEC Tournament semifinal at Bridgestone Arena.
Alabama trailed for must of the game but emerged victorious through big stops and clutch shots down the stretch to improve to 23-6 overall this season, the most wins since going 23-12 in 2012. ....
