P-J photo by Jay Young The use of herbicides in Chautauqua Lake north of Long Point State Park is shaping up to be a contentious issue in 2021. Applications for herbicide permits in Chautauqua Lake have already been delivered to the state DEC asking for permission to use herbicide on about 900 acres of Chautauqua Lake. A study of submerged vegetation throughout the lake by North Carolina University students found Eurasian milfoil as the second-most prominent type of vegetation in the town of Chautauqua’s waters. Out of 381 sampling locations, 93% contained vegetation, with 44% of the locations having moderate vegetation and 28% sparse vegetation. Organizers plan to try to host the next dragon boat races Aug. 13, 2022, in Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Celoron. “It is our sincere hope that the community will be opened, and the virus contained by 2022 so we can provide a bigger and better event than ever before,” organizers said in a Facebook post. Originating in China 2,000 years ago, dragon boat racing is one the fastest growing water sports in the world. Races are held annually in Buffalo and in the Finger Lakes region. The event has grown since debuting on Chautauqua Lake in 2016. Dragon boat racing is team-driven as participants work in unison to propel a 31-foot canoe through a designated course. Feb 15, 2021 Members of the Chautauqua Lake Association have delivered the Chautauqua Lake Ice Pick to Bemus Bay where it will remain until the spring thaw. The bright orange tripod is placed on the frozen water near The Lawson Center in Bemus Point. Once the clock is set, the pick is monitored with video surveillance to accurately record the precise date and time the pick falls through the ice. As a winter fundraiser for the CLA, the community is invited to share their predications on when the ice will thaw and the ice pick will drop. To participate, predict the exact date and time the pick will fall through the ice. There will be a $5 donation per guess and predictions will be accepted through March 20. ....
Richard Harry Bloomquist Richard Harry Bloomquist of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away on Jan. 10, 2021 after living with Parkinson’s disease for several years. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Judy Bloomquist, his children Jamie Bloomquist, and Karrie Bloomquist, daughter-in-law Victoria Lasbury and grandchildren Mason and Leah Bloomquist, and Harper Coburn of Maine, and his step-children Gannon and Michelle Ulrich, and Jocelyn and Bryan Camarata, and grandchildren Jacob, Henry, Gianni, and Charlie. Rick grew up in Jamestown and Naples, Fla., raised by his loving parents, Harry and Marguerite Bloomquist and was proud of the Swedish heritage they celebrated. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1963 and Grove City College in 1967. Rick worked for Corning Glass and Marine Midland Bank in his early career.
